About Coaching Roots

I’ve spent years going deep on one question: why do some athletes perform brilliantly under pressure while others with equal physical ability fall apart at the worst moment?

It’s not talent. It’s not fitness. It’s what’s happening between the ears — and more specifically, it’s what the coach is or isn’t doing to build mental toughness before the pressure arrives.

That question led me down a long road through sports psychology research, coaching philosophy, and the stories of the coaches who built the great teams and coaching trees that shaped American football. What I found was that the mental side of coaching is both massively important and massively underserved — most coaches get plenty of information about X’s and O’s, but almost nothing practical about the psychological side of leading athletes.

Why Coaching Roots exists: To translate sports psychology research into practical tools that coaches can actually use on the sideline — not in a university lecture hall.

What You’ll Find Here

Coaching Roots is built around six core areas, each one chosen because it directly affects how coaches develop athletes and build winning cultures:

Coaching Psychology covers the mental frameworks behind great coaching — confidence building, handling adversity, motivation, and the psychological principles that the best coaches use whether they know it or not.

Mental Performance Drills translates those principles into actual practice-field tools — pre-game routines, focus drills, visualization techniques, and the kind of structured mental prep that elite programs do quietly while everyone else focuses on physical conditioning.

Coaching Gear & Tools is honest gear coverage — equipment, software, playbook tools, and communication gear reviewed for what they actually do for coaches, not just what the marketing says.

Coaching Trees & Football Legacy explores how the great coaches built their systems and passed them on — because understanding how coaching knowledge spreads is one of the most underrated ways to accelerate your own development.

Team Culture & Leadership tackles the harder stuff — locker room conflict, parent communication, building a culture that holds together when the season gets difficult.

Coaching Career covers the practical path — certifications, career progression, and what it actually takes to build a coaching career at the high school level and beyond.

Who This Is For

Primarily youth and high school coaches — the people putting in enormous time and energy for athletes who need real leadership, not just someone running drills. If you coach a team sport and you care about getting the mental side right, you’re in the right place.

I also write for serious students of the game — people who care about coaching history and the tactical and psychological evolution of football. The coaching trees content is for you.

How I Approach This

Everything on this site is researched and written to be useful first. I read the psychology literature so you don’t have to, and I translate it into language that makes sense for someone standing on a sideline with 45 athletes looking at them. When I recommend gear or books, I’ve either used them personally or done detailed research on what coaches actually report back about them.

Looking for a starting point? The Coaching Psychology Complete Guide is the best place to begin — it covers the core mental frameworks that run through everything else on the site.
